Synopsis

RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran directs David Tennant in the title role. David is joined in the Company by Oliver Ford Davies as the Duke of York, Michael Pennington as John of Gaunt and Nigel Lindsay as Bolingbroke.

Although divinely ordained, Richard II (David Tennant) has very mortal weaknesses. His big mistake is to exile his popular cousin Henry Bolingbrook (Nigel Lindsay) who will later become Henry IV. When Bolingbrook learns that he has also been robbed of his inheritance, he takes advantage of the King's absence in Ireland to raise an army and stage an invasion of England.

The first of Shakespeare's four great plays about the House of Lancaster is a politically charged exploration of power and Machiavellian plotting.
