Behind the scenes at the Bolshoi Ballet

On Sunday 10 January at 3pm, there's a special event for dance lovers when the Electric Picture House in Wotton-under-Edge screens the new documentary Bolshoi Babylon (PG).  The film looks at the inner workings of Russia's world-famous Bolshoi  Ballet, as the company weathers the fallout from the notorious 2013 acid attack on the ballet’s Director, Sergei Filin. Following the film, audiences will also be able to enjoy an interview with some of the people involved with the film, broadcast live via satellite.

A symbol of Russia, the Bolshoi is a national treasure and one of the most famous institutions in the world. Recently, however, the theatre has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons: intrigue, personal attacks and management changes have created lurid headlines.  Now, for the first time, the theatre directors have allowed the backstage process to documented.

From director Nick Read and producer/co-director Mark Franchetti , the two-time Academy Award-winning Producer of Man on Wire and Searching for Sugarman, Bolshoi Babylon (PG) gives a voice to artists and company members on irreverent and candid terms. With unparalleled behind the scenes access, the film provides a unique and privileged insight into the dancers’ extraordinary artistic and athletic talents, their abiding fear of injury and the ruthless ambition needed to survive in the world’s most famous ballet company.

We are thrilled to announce that Bolshoi principle dancer, Anastasia Meskova, will be joining the filmmakers, plus bestselling historian Simon Sebag Montefiore and other special guests for a live by satellite post screening Q&A.

Tickets can be booked in advance at www.wottoncinema.com
