Local teenagers take over cinema

The Electric Picture House Cinema, Wotton-under-Edge is launching a new programme strand featuring films selected by and for young people in the town.

The Friday Films for YOUth came from the Wott-ON project, which asked young people who live in and around Wotton-under-Edge to tell us their ideas to help improve life in the town. Of the proposed ideas, six were selected by public vote, including the idea of a regular film slot aimed at younger audiences.  The first two films have now been scheduled, with titles selected from a shortlist drawn up by the teenagers.  Tickets for ages 11 - 18 are at the reduced price of just £3 each.

The first film will be Men in Black 3 (PG), on Friday 24 April at 5pm, starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.  In Men in Black 3, Agents J (Smith) and K (Lee Jones) are back...in time.  J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K's life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him -- secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.

Gareth Negus, Managing Director of the Picture House, said, "We were delighted that the idea of a film strand for young people was so well received, and we've been really pleased to work with them on picking the first two films. It would be great to see the idea get the support it needs to continue."

17 year old Kemi Ogunseye, one of the young people involved, said: "Films for YOUth is a great idea as it is affordable and the people of Wotton get to have a say in what they watch."

The second film has been confirmed as Insurgent (12A), the second film in the Divergent series, on Friday 15 May at 5pm.
