Running time: 148 mins

Synopsis

Based on Haruki Murakami's short story 'Barn Burning' and nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2018, Lee Chang-dong's Burning follows introvert Jong-soo (Yoo Ah-in), who meets Hae-mi (Jeon Jong-seo), after she claims to remember him from their childhood. The two begin seeing each other, but when Hae-mi returns from a trip, she is accompanied by wealthy socialite Ben (Steven Yeun).

The acclaimed South Korean director fleshes out Murakami's short story to immerse the viewer in the world of his characters whilst exploring male rage, class conflict and working-class struggles, as well as unrequited love and the nature of obsession. Showing as part of the Stroud Film Festival 2019.
