Buster Keaton's The General

Running time: 75 mins

Synopsis

The first in our selection of films from the BFI's Art of Action season.
Between 1920 and 1929, Buster Keaton created a run of films that established him as one of cinema's great actor-directors; The General (1926) is widely considered his masterpiece. Set during the Civil War and based on a true incident, the film is also an authentic looking period piece. The title refers not to Keaton's character, but to his engine, 'The General' which figures prominently in one of the most harrowing and hilarious chase scenes ever filmed.
